Composite
Composite decking is becoming more and more popular with homeowners that don’t want any maintenance but like the “Stained wood look”. The make up of the board is a combination of wood flour and PVC resin. There are hundreds of extruders of different kinds of composites but be careful because many are not BOCA and IRC approved. MVS is a certified installer of several brands of composite decking including but not limited to the following: TimberTech, TREX, Procell and Weatherbest.  All can be installed with hidden fasteners of traditional top screws.

Cellular Vinyl
Vinyl decking is the most durable of all decking.  It is the easiest to clean and maintain do to it’s nonabsorbent finish and hard PVC chemical make up.  Various colors and tread patterns are available and will truly last a lifetime.

Treated Southern Pine

Treated Southern Pine
Treated Southern Pine is the greatest “bang for the buck”.  Treated lumber has been around for years so you now what to expect.  Treated lumber has a lifetime warranty but will require some maintenance to keep it looking nice.  In the past wood was CCA treated (copper, chromium & arsenate) but because these are now considered hazardous waste they are no longer used.  We use Wolmanized natural select treated lumber which is treated with a copper-based preservative with an organic fungicide.  Learn more about this at www.naturalselect.com.  The other draw back to treated lumber is that it comes from lumberyard extremely wet and after it is installed it likes to shrink and warp as the sun dries it out.  This can be helped by treating the wood fibers with a product called Penofin.

Cedar

Cedar is the old traditional decking that all products aspire to look like but try not to act like.  Though is has a natural beauty all of its own, it rarely lasts more than 10 years and needs continual maintenance.

Exotic Hardwood

Exotic Hardwood
Exotic Hardwoods like Ipe and Ironwood are South American walnuts that work great as deck boards.  They are extremely hard so they stand up to tough climates and don’t shrink much.  They start out a rich walnut looking color and fade to a silver color and do not require any maintenance.  These woods will literally last a lifetime and can be stained with Penofin to retain that rich walnut look.
